Types of Fire Alarm Systems

How does a conventional fire alarm work?
Each call point or smoke alarm is connected to the main fire alarm control panel by connecting the devices by wire to the panel. When a detector is triggered or gets activated, the fire alarm control panel will operate the sounders indicating the zones of the trigger and if a full evacuation is needed. What are the advantages of a conventional system?
- These type of systems are very suitable for smaller business premises where a complicated system is not required to keep its safe.
- Also the system cost is much less
What are the disadvantages of a conventional system?
The exact location of the triggered device is difficult to pinpoint in a conventional fire alarm system. However if the wiring is done on different floors or by zones, then an indication of the zone can pinpoint the location of the trigger If any fault in the wires or becomes severed the devices becomes disconnected and thereby no signal will be given in case of a fireFor many large scale industries, office buildings, apartments, hotels and large factories, having an Addressable Fire Alarm system is most suitable. This system is able to exactly pinpoint the location where the fire or device was triggered from.
How does an addressable fire alarm work?
Each Detector or call point are connected to the main fire alarm control panel has its own address. When a fire is detected or a device is triggered, the address of the detector is displayed on the main control panel. This system is connected to sounders which are in turn activated only in the area where the triggered detector is, saving the disruption of full evacuations and false alarms.
What are the advantages of an addressable fire alarm system?
- It is easy and quick for the identification of the location of the fire
- Pre-alarm feature gives a pre-warning at the main panel without operating the sounders, giving staff time to investigate a false alarm or potential fire. The detector will still operate if it senses a fire.
- It helps to reduce false alarms.
- Repeater panels can be installed on larger sites, mimicking the information and controls of the main fire alarm control panel. This enables full control of the entire fire safety system across your site.
- Remote diagnostics allows us to dial into your system from our office and examine the control panel for any issues. This means we can solve problems immediately, often eliminating the need for an engineer visit.
What are the disadvantages of an addressable system?
However it is not as cheap to buy as a conventional fire alarm system
